How would you monetize WhatsApp?
- Whitney Chard
WhatsApp the Product:
- It’s a P2P messaging app which lets users connects with each other using their contact number
- Users can create groups, broadcast lists, and put up stories within the Meta ecosystem or separately
- Users also have the ability to share different forms of media like images, location, videos, links etc.
Why do I like it:
- Helps me stay connected with my family and friends in back home
- Ability to share things that are personal with them, without the need to put it on any other platform
- Easy access to video calling using the Wifi without having to worry about the international call rates
Sanitation Questions:
- Purpose of Improvement: (DECIDE YOURSELF) Revenue
- We are in a mild recession, which we have no idea as to how long it will last. WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps, and has already acquired well over a billion users. Also, if someone has WhatsApp, they are already using it over other social media platforms to stay closer to their loved ones, and share things that they don’t wish to share to a larger audience. Therefore, I feel we are at the monetization stage for WhatsApp.
- Geography to Focus on: US
- Devices to Focus on: Mobile Only
- User Segment to Focus on: (DECIDE YOURSELF)
User Segments:
- Individuals- Use WhatsApp for personal use like staying close to family
- Small to Medium Business- Use traditional messages
- Large Business- Use traditional messages
Segment of Choice is SME:
- Have the ability to pay
- Looking for ways to acquire and engage customers
Pain Points:
- Customer Acquisition- acquiring new customers to their business (not necessarily something WhatsApp can solve as we keep the information of our users secure and can not market that information to potential businesses so they could acquire those customers)
- Retaking Forgetters- getting the customers who left their business on the cart page or after signup
- Customer Engagement- Visits to site from acquired customers
- Customer Education- About the new products, services, deals, and offers
Solutions:
-
- Provides rates cheaper than messages to share content like gifs, videos, and photos
-
- Provide the ability to let SMEs gather user information in a safe manner by letting them ask for it through secure forms
-
- Provide the ability to get order summary, exclusive gifts and offers by creating an API for POS payments which is directly linked to WhatsApp
- 4. Build a WhatsApp shop which allows the SME to connect as a personal helper (like in a showroom) with the customer
- 5. Build a WhatsApp shopping AI, where a user can interact with WhatsApp about their needs, create lists etc. For the businesses that are subscribed to that service, we can recommend their products
