The way I would like to approach this is understanding what my users would look like in the next decade

Facts:

  1. Global users in next decade – ‘Gen Z’ (majority of these will be coming from Asia/Africa) with following characterstics
  • High awareness
  • High tech savvyness
  • High & quick change adaptability
  • High curiousity to try new things

2.What would above user segments prefer from tech

  • Smart, Intuitive & quick actionability
  • Which ties back to latest fashion
  • Comfortability
  • Cost efficiency

Three technology trends, I think will help shape industry in next decade are

  • AI/ML: How tech can help them with actionable insights and make their life easier
  • IOT: The way different common household objects example: lights, coffee machine, vacuum cleaner etc are coming together in the ecosystem controlled by internet will complete change the whole landscape
  • AR/VR:

i) Education (Academia/Sports/Trade skills): Ability to learn new skills more intuitively without the hassle of physical traveling or reading long text content

ii) Shopping: Giving the end users same in-store shopping experience without requiring to visit a physical store

iii) Smart glass: Launch of ‘Apple glass’ as a product in 2022 or beyond has high potential to change human lives (especially those who will wear glasses/contact lenses). Apple has done it before and seems to be leading the way with this another value add concept

iv) Gaming: With more users being Gen Z, the way we today play gaming will look different in 10 years as it will be more enriched, real life character experience. Facebook’s oculus has already made great strides in this direction.

Information Security: Cyber attacks will only continue to increase in frequency and severity in the next decade. In order to adapt to this new threat, companies will invest more heavily in security systems as well as include security as a bedrock to any new product launches. Companies that don’t focus maintain security as a key focus will become the target of multiple attacks and will eventually lose market credibility.

Edge Computing/5G/IoT: All 3 of these technologies are interconnected and their success is interdependent. Consumers increasingly want connected devices in their homes, cars, and workplaces. 5G and edge computing technologies will improve latency and make a true IoT world possible. Stealth projects for smart-cities will begin broader launches in the next few years which completely change how people interact with the objects that surround them.

Workforce Productivity/Working-Remote: The pandemic has proven out what many tech enthusiasts have been screaming for years – Remote work is real work. Most white collars workers have home set ups that allow them to successfully do their jobs from home (or partially from home). A shift to WFH will have massive effects on industries like Real Estate, Hospitality, and Transportation.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The increasing ability of machines to learn and act intelligently will absolutely transform our world. It is also the driving force behind many of the other trends on this list.

The Internet of Things (IoT). This refers to the ever-growing number of “smart” devices and objects that are connected to the internet. Such devices are constantly gathering and transmitting data, further fueling the growth in Big Data and AI.

Blockchains and distributed ledgers. This super-secure method of storing, authenticating, and protecting data could revolutionize many aspects of business – particularly when it comes to facilitating trusted transactions.

Cloud and edge computing. Cloud computing – where data is stored on other computers and accessed via the internet – has helped to open up data and analytics to the masses. Edge computing – where data is processed on smart devices (like phones) – will take this to the next level.
