Q. How do you improve Instagram’s share feature?
Describe the product
Instagram is a social media platform that allows users to share their photos/videos.
Share is a button that is shown on every post right next to the comment button. It allows users to share that post with someone else.
Currently, it allows three options:
- Share to Direct: Share with another Instagram user.
- Share via Email: Share the link via email
- Copy Link: Copy the post URL so that you can share it outside the app directly.
Possible reasons to improve
There can be many reasons why we want to improve the share feature:
Reasons to ImproveExamplesPros/Cons
| 1. To increase Instagram revenue | Allowing users to instantly share products with top 3 users in their network | Pros – Improves sharing engagement, increasing the chance of users buying the product. – Makes it easy to share with their frequent users Cons |
| 2. To increase the usage of the feature | By simplifying the UX from multi-step to 2 steps | Pros – Allow the user to share quickly within their network. Cons |
| 3. To improve the UX | Allowing users to add context to the shared link (Comments, Emojis, etc) | Pros – It allows users to add some context as to why am I sharing this link with them. Right now we can only share a link without any context to it. Cons |
| 4. To improve the UX | Allowing sharing directly to other platforms like Telegram/WhatsApp etc | Pros – It allows the user to share the link directly to a platform of their choice Cons |
Choose a goal
In the times when other TikTok clones are coming up, we have to make sure our users don’t churn away.
To do that, we would like our userbase to easily share interesting content with others at ease.
Hence engagement with share features should be the highest priority.
Users of this feature and their use case
ShoppersContent CreatorsContent Consumers
| Who they are? | Users who saw some cool product and are considering buying this product but need an opinion from someone else. | Users who are looking for new kinds of content to refer to. For example A new dance routine I’d like to share with my dance partner/friend to ask her if this is a good dance routine to dance on next. | Users who want to share cool content within their network that they found. Ex. Saw a cool meme video that I’d like to share with my friends. |
| What are their pain points? | They want to share the product links outside the app like on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, etc to get an opinion from someone else | They want to quickly share interesting content with a handful of people who they collaborate with. Example copy a dance routine/moves they just saw. | They want to share content they saw quickly within their network. They might be sharing the content with a lot of people. |

Define metrics for measuring performance
To evaluate the above solution, we’ll look at:
- The time it took before/after to share a post with a frequent user
- The time it took before/after to share a post via copy link feature
- The number of times before/after users shared a post using the copy link feature.
Conclusion
Share is an important feature for Instagram users to share content among their networks. It allows them to share content privately.
By reducing the number of steps it takes for them to share content faster, we can make this feature even more seamless.
