Estimate the number of passwords hacked around the world annually.
- Damian Marshall
Total Population of the World: 8Bn
People having access to any kind of device (Mobile, Laptop, etc) = 60% = 4.8Bn
People having access to internet = 60% = 2.88 Bn
There are 2.88Bn who are prone to get hacked
Reasons why they can get hacked:
- Individuals with high net income
- Individuals who are famous
- Individuals who have high authority/power
Lets consider from 2.88Bn, 30% of people fall in this category i.e. 864Mn
Now these categories can be overlapping (%- population (864Mn))
Let’s consider a Venn diagram
Only High income = 15%
Only Famous = 15%
Only High Power = 15%
High income & Famous = 10%
Famous & High Power = 10%
High Power & High Income = 10%
High income & Famous & High Power = 5%
Each category will not have an equal possibility of getting hacked (% – getting hacked/year)
Only High income = 20%=~26Mn
Only Famous = 20%=~26Mn
Only High Power = 20%=~26Mn
High income & Famous = 50%=~43Mn
Famous & High Power = 50%=~43Mn
High Power & High Income = 50%=~43Mn
High income & Famous & High Power = 80%=~35Mn
Total= ~242Mn/year
Also, as hacking has been fairly easy to learn thus there would be instances where teenagers try to hack someone considering a 20% increase on 242Mn i.e. ~290Mn/Year
