Design a product to improve Meta (Facebook) employees’ health.
- Marie Hamilton
Few Clarifying Questions:
Candidate(C): Are we talking about physical health or mental heath or you want me to decide?
Interviewer(I): You can decide which direction you want to go
C: Got it. I would prefer to keep the question open till we get to identify the exact problem we are trying to solve. Is it fine we focus initially on the US context and expand later geographically?
I: You can make that assumption
C: Thanks. Is there any specific timeline we are looking for? Are there any other constraints or limitations we should be aware of?
I: We are looking to launch this in the next 6 months. And no other constraints.
C: Got it. The way I would want to approach it is by trying to answer the following questions
A. Why this product should exist?
B. Who is the user and her pain point?
C. What is the solution?
Does it makes sense?
I: yes, please go ahead.
C: Employees in the big technology companies have challenging targets to meet resulting in significant stress and rainout. Plus the pandemic forcing people to work from home added sense of seclusion and detachment which would add to this stress. As these employees are the key resources based on which the company’s competitive advantage is based on. So as a company Meta would want to take care of the health of the employees so that they could be continue to contribute significantly in the company’s growth plan. From the business goal perspective, there could be virus ways we can think of tracking the progress like number of days the employees take leave out sick or the overall performance rating of the employees. But I would propose to have a direct metric by doing survey of the employees which would try to understand the feeling of well-being and being healthy from the employees. As far as the product level goals go, I would defer defining those till we get to the point of actually defining the solution and then we can chart out the key metrics for that. Does that makes sense.?
I: Yes, how would you go about the next step.
C: I would next define the Who i.e. who are the users and their pain points.
I: Makes sense. Please go ahead.
C: I could think of various user segments who could be relevant here as follows:
1. Employees
2. Family of the employee
3. Manager of the Employee
4. Health service providers like hospitals / clinics
I would think focussing on the employees would make the most sense as we would be able to directly impact their pain points. The employees I further divided into 2 segments:
1. Middle Aged employees with families
2. Young employees who are single
3. Senior Leadership
I would prioritize the segments based on the size and the need for a solution for the segment.
Based on that I would prioritize the Middle Aged segment as being a sufficeicntly large segment and also potentially having significant stress related health issues as catering to multiple professional and personal responsibilities. The young employees would need lesser help for a health related solution while the Senior Leadership might be requiring a solution but the segment size is much smaller. So I will prioritize the Middle Aged Employee with Family. Does that makes sense?
I: Yes.
C: Next, I would think about the pain points of the segment. For that, we can think in terms of user journey as follows:
Develop health issues —> Detect issue —> Treat issue
We can think of various paint point across the journey
Develop:
I am always stressed
I am always working and could not make time for my family
I am not able to maintain a health lifestyle in terms of diet and physical exercise
Detect Issue:
What issues I might develop?
Where do I get to test them?
Treat issue:
Find Doctor
Schedule Appointment
Start and continue treatment
I would prioritize the pain points based on the Size of the segment having the pain and availability of existing solutions. There is already existing effective solutions for Detecting and Treating issues. Like employees have yearly checkups to find issues and at middle aged they would most probabyly have a fixed doctor.
The pain points around Developing issue is where I believe are expansive across the segment and also need for a good solution. Hence I will focus on the following pain points.
I am always stressed
I am always working and could not make time for my family
I am not able to maintain a health lifestyle in terms of diet and physical exercise
Does that makes sense?
I: Yes, let’s think about few solutions around that.
C: I could think of three solutions
1. Family Program Services: This would be a portal where the FB Employees would be able to access various activities which they can do as a family like going to amusement parks or having a tennis sessions with the kids. FB will tie up with these services and enable its employees to access them for a subsidized rate or for free. Idea is by making it easy employees would be availing these services unlocking quality family time reducing stress and consequently mitigating health related issue risks
2. Professional Stress Relieving Services Facebook can arrange for health service professionals expert who will have sessions with the employees and help them improve their lifestyle and well being. Employees would be able to go and book single or a series of sessions from a portal and then take benefit of them.
3. Beat the stress noticeboard: Its like a community noticeboard where employees can post about the various fun stuff they have done. Others can comment on them take inspiration from them and overall improve their lifestyle and well-being. Facebook could take idea from popular activities and offer them as a company wide activity.
Does these make sense?
I: Yes, how would your prioritize them?
C: I would prioritize based on the expected impact and the Implementation/Build Complexity. Following is my prioritization
Idea —> Impact —> Cost
Family Program Services—> L —> L
Professional Services—>M —> M
Beat the Stress Noticeboard—> M —> S
It will be a question about the timeline by which we need to launch. We have 6 months. If some good number of family programs could be tied up with and offered I would go with the Family Program Services, else I would go with the leaner solution of the Beat the Stress Noticeboard
I: Thank you. This makes sense.
